Compulsions Compulsions can come under the same banner as Obsessions which are sometimes referred to as Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD) and may affect as many as 2% - 3% of the population. The world Health Organisation includes it in its 10 most debilitating illnesses. Many who suffer from OCD successfully conceal the condition and are too embarrassed to seek help.
Compulsions differ from obsessions in that the individual feels compelled to perform some act and so reduce the anxiety they feel for their particular obsession. These actions are repeated continually and are carried our automatically. The most common examples are excessive washing and cleaning, counting, constant rechecking, hoarding and repetition of words or phrases.
Hypnotherapy is an alternative therapy which can assist with the distress. Hypnotherapy aims to find out the root cause of the problem which may stem from childhood experiences. Once that is known, positive suggestions can be fed into the subconscious to rectify the problems. This changes the mind-set of the sufferer and eases the symptoms of anxiety
